REPORT TO BROAD VALLEYS FEDERATION
MARCH 9, 2012
The Meagher County City Library operated this past year with one full-time Library Director, volunteers and short-term workers.
Michael Vennard volunteered his time to develop and launch the library website www.meaghercountylibrary.org mid-March then worked revising and inputting information the first three months of operation. Management of the website was delegated to summer intern Alana Mueller-Brunckhorst in June.
Library mission statement and goals were written and adopted effective April 12, 2011.
Articles of Incorporation and by-laws were written for the Meagher County Library Foundation which received 501c3 status July 15, 2011. The Board of Directors is moving forward with plans for a new library facility to be built on land purchased in 2009.
The library was asked to partner with Hopa Mountain to distribute early literacy information and board books to families in the community. Twenty-five children’s backpacks were sewn by local residents, filled with Montana State Library Ready2Read/Hopa Mountain board books, flyers, and childhood literacy brochures and given to caregivers with children ages 0-3. The Books for Babies program launched February 2010 continues to grow and meet Wednesday mornings. Toys and additional books for the program as well as LEGOS for the children’s area were purchased through individual donations.
One World, Many Stories summer reading program involved seventy-five children with an average weekly attendance of 27 children. Local residents presented programs on Thailand, Cambodia, Guam, China, Ecuador and England. The six-week program concluded with a Hawaiian luau complete with food, games and piñata prizes.
The library joined MontanaLibrary2Go and went live March 2, 2012.
The library is again participating in book courier delivery service using Lewis and Clark Library as its hub.
The library’s front entrance door received a face lift with a three-dimensional full-length mural painted voluntarily by local resident Kim Hamm.
Volunteer Melinda Vennard watered and fertilized the library’s trees and flowers and organized Friends of the Library meetings/events.
The library’s exterior was painted and portions of siding replaced by board members Gordon Doig, Elton Lee and Steve Hicks with voluntary assistance from Tintina Resources, Inc. employees and local residents.
A former White Sulphur Springs student, Logan Pierce, who now attends Harlowton High School, worked with his shop teacher using the school’s computerized plasma cutter to construct a new library sign. Board member Elton Lee coordinated the project assisting board member Steve Hicks with removal of posts and erecting the new sign.
Elton Lee constructed a new bookshelf for the backroom. Three donated paperback spin racks were painted by T&W Auto Body without charge and added to the backroom.
Sherry Pritchard organized scrapbooks with 2009/2010/2011 library newspaper clippings and pictures taken during the summer reading program.
